Much clinical waste is hazardous. The European List of Waste gives healthcare waste its own chapter. Waste whose collection and disposal is subject to special requirements to prevent infection is classified as hazardous, as are cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines and dental amalgam waste.
The producer stays responsible. Under the Waste Framework Directive, the original producer or holder must treat the waste itself or hand it to an authorised operator. National law sets how far responsibility passes on handover, so the producer should check the collector’s permits.
Records and registration. Producers of hazardous waste keep records of quantities, types and destinations. Poland runs a national waste database, BDO, in which waste producers generally must be entered. Slovakia has its own record and reporting duties. The research confirms what applies to a clinic of each size.
Storage and packaging are national. How long infectious waste may be kept before collection, at what temperature and in which containers is set by national regulations. These are often the first things an inspector checks.

Clinic waste duties: Poland

Classification. Sharps, infectious dressings and amalgam waste from the dental clinics are hazardous waste, each under its own code in the healthcare chapter of the waste list. Expired medicines are coded according to whether they are cytotoxic. The code for each stream is in the table.

Storage and collection. Infectious waste is stored in the conditions and for no longer than the periods set in the national regulation cited in row 3. Collection is by the authorised contractor named in the table, and site managers check the contractor’s registration before each new contract.

Records. Each clinic keeps its waste records in the national database and confirms that every collection is documented there. The operations lead reviews the records each quarter.

The situation

A clinic chain’s sites, services and waste streams

Your group runs outpatient and dental clinics in Kraków, Katowice and Bratislava, with a minor-surgery unit opening in Košice. The Slovak waste contractor has changed, an internal audit found sharps containers stored for weeks in a basement, and the operations director wants one note per country on what the clinics must do as waste producers.

Everyone knows infectious waste is hazardous. The hours go on the duties around it: the codes, how long waste may be stored on site, packaging and labelling, who may collect it, which records and registrations are needed and what the producer still answers for after handover. Each country sets these in its own waste act and regulations.

  • The waste streams and volumes at each site.
  • Guidance and decisions of the environmental and sanitary authorities, which azta does not hold.
  • Choosing the contractor and signing off the note.

Frequently asked questions

Does azta hold environmental authority guidance?
For these countries it holds national legislation and EU law, not the environmental or sanitary authorities’ guidance. Check that separately where the note depends on it.
Can it tell us the code for a specific item?
It cites the list of waste and the national rules and explains how they apply to the item you describe. The final classification stays with you and your contractor.
